Regulating Detention

RECEDE is an European Research Council project investigating the regulation and oversight of criminal justice custody and developing new models of regulation to improve safety

Project Introduction

The expansion of criminal justice detention poses a major moral, social, economic and public health threat, with the implications of bloated and unsafe detention facilities rippling across contemporary societies. Regulation – understood broadly in terms of monitoring, oversight, investigation, pressure groups and prisoner advocacy activities – has the potential to stem the harms of incarceration but little is known about its impact. This project aims to map and theorise the regulation of detention sites in England and Wales and develop new models that have more potential to challenge the harms of prison and detention.
