REgulating Criminal justicE DEtention: glocal prospects for improving health and safety (RECEDE)

The expansion of criminal justice detention poses a major moral, social, economic and public health threat, with the implications of bloated and unsafe detention facilities rippling across contemporary societies. Regulation – understood broadly in terms of monitoring, oversight, investigation, pressure groups and prisoner advocacy activities – has the potential to stem the harms of incarceration but little is known about its impact. This project aims to map and theorise the regulation of detention sites in England and Wales and develop new models that have more potential to challenge the harms of prison and detention.
